McDonald’s Is As Desi As Can Be

The last 20 years has seen an unprecedented rise in the consumption of fast food and quick service restaurants in India. The trend, which was popularized by the arrival of McDonald’s India, has caught on fast and today, hundreds of global brands have set up shop in the country.

But it wasn’t so easy for McDonald’s to setup shop here. How would people react to American food and flavors? How would McDonald’s convince people to give it a shot, since restaurant dining was limited to few and was largely driven by local flavors? Would it be a success in the long run? These were just some of the questions that had to be looked upon while bringing the franchise to India.

As we know now, McDonald’s did make some changes to the local menu in order to suit the local cuisine sensibility of the people. And it’s not the first time they have done this. In France, one can get a Le P’titMoutarde, a smaller-size burger with a layer of mustard sauce and in the Netherlands, they serve a McKroket. In Germany, a shrimp with cocktail sauce is offered and there’s a burger on pita bread for the Greek market and a McKebab for Israel.

As for India, there are 5 products that are very quintessentially Indian. They are listed below.

McAlooTiki Burger

The McAloo Tikki Burger is one of McDonald’s oldest and most recognizable burgers, sold in India. This simple burger comprises of a potato fillet with tomato, mayo and onions, under a layer of bun. The vegetarian item has been a staple of McDonald’s since 2004 and is a much sought after item served.

Paneer Salsa Wrap

In a largely vegetarian country, paneer is quite the staple food of a lot of people and McDonald’s Paneer Salsa Wrap reflects that. This tasty wrap, which contains paneer and salsa, cheddar cheese and eggless mayo, is a fun quick bite to eat and goes well with some siders.

Maharaja Mac

India cannot have BigMac so McDonald’s, instead of ripping BigMac for some knockoff, developed the Maharaja Mac. The burger is India’s version of the BigMac and its size and volume reflects. With two layers of bun, patty and vegetables, it’s twice the fun to eat and binge on. And it is most definitely worth having.

Veg Maharaja Mac

One of the challenges in India is the sheer volume of vegetarians in the country which means that a lot of food items need to cater to this market. Veg Maharaja Mac was created as the first vegetarian BigMac for the Indian population and is a two layered burger filled with awesome sauce.

Mango McFlurry Topped with Chili Flakes

Us Indians love our spices and sweets with the same vigor. As such, McDonald’s decided to combine the flavor of our national fruit and our national spice to create a whole new spicy ice-cream. Chilli isn’t our national spice but it might as well be. Doesn’t get more desi than this, for sure.
