Homemade Outdoor Cushion Cleaner

A cleaning solution you can make at home to keep your outdoor cushions free from everyday debris and stains.

Besides the countless health benefits to sunshine and fresh air, the outdoors is also something that can bring us all together. Make sure that your patio furniture is ready to host your family and friends all summer long with just a simple clean!

Each year, as the snow begins to melt and as the sun begins to shine just a bit warmer, we find ourselves itching to be reunited with the great outdoors! Though there are plenty of opportunities within a simple reach, sometimes the greatest place to enjoy mother nature is right at home! Just out of our front door (or back door), we can create our own oasis for enjoying the beauty of weather, and the buzz of energy from all the new blooms. Whether it be in your favorite outdoor sofa, love seat, rocker, or swing; just watching time go by, snuggling up with a favorite book, or enjoying a family meal outside, we are all ready to enjoy some fresh air. When we finally get the opportunity to hit the outdoors, the last thing we want to be concerned about is the cleanliness of where we are settling in. Fortunately, there is an easy solution to keeping our patio cushions clean; and it can be made right at home! Save both time and money by mixing away your own batch. All that is needed to create your own cushion cleaner is 1 roll of strong paper towels, 1 bottle of dishwasher soap, 1 box of borax, and a bottle or bucket to mix your ingredients in.

To create your cleaning solution, simply mix:

  • 1.5 teaspoons of dishwasher soap (liquid)
  • 1.5 teaspoons Borax
  • 1 quart warm water

Take your cleaning solution and:

  1. Douse seat cushion(s) and let set for 10 minutes
  2. Blot affected area with paper towel
  3. Hose off cushions and let air dry (preferably in the sun)

*If you have deep set in stains, use a dish scrubber to work the stains before letting the solution set, then follow the steps normally

*when handling cleaning chemicals, it is best to wear gloves or something to protect your skin from exposure while using the product. Make sure to wash your hands after using cleaning products.

In just under 30 minutes, you can get your cushions to shine as bright as new! This solution also makes a large volume cutting down on expenses you would spend at the store for the same product. To keep your cushions safe from deep stains, make sure to repeat this cleaning remedy every couple of weeks, to function as both a cleaner and a stain preventative.
